Advanced Gum Disease Therapy

Advanced Gum Disease Treatment in Doncaster, South Yorkshire

Gum disease is one of the most prevalent oral conditions in the U.K., with some studies estimating that more than 75 percent of people over 35 years of age will suffer from some form of it. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to tooth loss, bad breath, poor cosmetics and pain. In addition, gum disease has been shown to be associated with afflictions elsewhere in the body, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and respiratory disease. Red Sky Dental Spa offers advanced gum disease treatment at our Doncaster office, with an emphasis on gentleness and thoroughness, so that our patients can overcome their gum problems and avoid the potentially dangerous consequences of gum disease.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is caused when plaque, the sticky substance produced by the millions of bacteria in the mouth, builds up on teeth. If not periodically removed by brushing or flossing, it can turn into tartar, a hard substance that strongly bonds to the tooth enamel and can only be removed by professional cleaning. The plaque and tartar irritate the gums by producing toxins and posions. Eventually the gums recede and pull away from the teeth, leaving deep pockets that attract more bacteria and can affect tooth stability.  This can lead to abscesses, pain, poor cosmetics and bad breath as mentioned previously. Gum disease treatment at Red Sky Dental Spa can ensure that the gums stay healthy and prevent the progression of the disease.

Symptoms of Gum Disease

Early symptoms of gum disease include red, swollen, or tender gums, and bleeding from the gums after brushing and flossing. Also, persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth may be indications of gum disease. In the later stages, patients may notice pockets forming between their teeth and gums, and the teeth may be able to move in their sockets. Teeth may even fall out in the advanced stages of gum disease if there is no treatment. Many Doncaster patients do not even realize they have gum disease when they first come to our office. They are surprised to learn during their cosmetic dentistry or general dentistry procedure that gum disease is present and must be treated.

Gum Disease Treatment

We offer several options for gum disease treatment at our Doncaster practice. We are able to treat many patients by professionally disinfecting the tooth root and any pockets that have formed by a processes known as subgingival root surface debridement. In the more advanced stages of gum disease, we may recommend laser treatment. This is an advanced form of treatment which can help the gums reattach to the teeth. If the gum disease is too far advanced, however, we may recommend pulling the tooth and replacing it with a dental implant or dental bridge.
