By gum! How healthy is your mouth?

Do you look after your oral health? At this time of year it’s easy to make resolutions we won’t keep. But make this one a top priority – your mouth and the rest of your body will thank you for it. Maintaining good oral hygiene doesn’t only keep your gums and teeth healthy, but new research is suggesting that protecting against gum disease can reduce the risk of cancers, diabetes, heart disease and even strokes.

So what is gum disease?

Gum disease is a nasty infective process which destroys the bone which supports teeth. It can lead to pain, bad breath, poor cosmetics and the loss of teeth. This is why prevention is better than the cure. When it comes to gum disease treatment, the quicker its caught, the better the chance of treating it more effectively. In advanced cases patients may need a series of special cleanings to remove the tartar which has caused the damage.

Treating gum disease is important for your general health and wellbeing.  Which is why at the Red Sky Dental Spa, we can help in cases of both basic and advanced gum disease. We use a laser to help treat gum disease and the results have often been referred to as ‘jaw dropping’ by other dentists.

What are the symptoms of gum disease?

The early warning signs are swollen, red or bleeding gums, particularly when you brush or floss. If you notice any of these signs and are at all concerned, then you should get your gums checked. As the sooner we can treat this, the better for teeth in terms of long term chances of survival.

General Advice

There are no real precautions that a patient should take beforehand, however just remember to eat well before any long appointments unless you are told otherwise. Repeat dental visits will be required as gum disease is cyclic, meaning you will have times when it flares up and it technically never stops. So long term professional support has to be done without fail to prevent the loss of teeth.

Risks

There is always a risk that any procedure won’t work, but this is usually down to genetics. The key is to get the treatment right. At the Red Sky Dental Spa, your safety and comfort is paramount and every stage of the procedure will be explained thoroughly.

Aftercare

When it comes to looking after your teeth, home care is incredibly important. We also advise professional support every 2-3 months depending on how your gums respond to treatment.  Cleaning between your teeth daily by brushing, flossing and rinsing will help to prevent gum disease –in fact it’s the most important thing you can do to prevent the problem.
