I often get asked this question. The answer is that it very much depends on the type of tooth movement required. In many instances it is possible to use the Inman aligner which can often straighten teeth in as little as 9 weeks.
The Inman aligner is safe to use and an excellent choice, particularly if you have had braces previously and the teeth have moved again. We have used the aligner successfully to straighten very crooked teeth, as you can see in our Smile Gallery
Another alternative is the Six Month Smiles system. The Inman aligner provides very specific tooth movements, and as such not everyone is suitable to the aligner. Six Month Smiles offers another solution to give ultra rapid, confidence boosting results.

I often get asked whether we provide braces for adults. Yes we do, in fact, most of our braces clients are adults!

Yes you can. There is no reason you can’t have bracework if you have veneers. In fact, a very common problem is that veneers have been used where braces would have been the first treatment choice. Incorrect use of veneers when the teeth are not in the right position can cause a big cosmetic problem.
Depending on what tooth movements are required, often we can perform the brace work, either Six Month Smiles, Invisalign or the Inman aligner and not have to replace the veneers at the end of treatment. Of course there are cases when veneer replacement will also be required. We would be more than happy to discuss all options with you and find out how to give you the smile you have wanted.

Yes, it can happen! Veneers are not infallible against chewing forces, and if your teeth are worn and you want them veneering to improve your confidence, you may be at an increased risk of the veneers fracturing. A catch 22 situation indeed!
I’ve had advanced level training from Dr Spear in the US and Dr Gurel from Europe, both of whom are at the very forefront of cosmetics and veneers placement, and in particular, prevention of problems.
Many people have veneers done when they ideally require braces or a combination of braces and veneers. Also with dental tourism on the rise, many veneers are made “cheap”, and to further keep costs down standard materials are used to bond the veneers is place. All of these parameters can potentially increase the risk of veneer fracture.

“I’ve been told veneer preparations are painful, can I have no prep veneers?”
You’ve been told wrong! VERY wrong! Allow me to lay to rest some spin about veneers.
Veneers do not require a “substantial” amount of tooth preparation, and 95% of cases are prepared without anaesthetic and NO pain. This lie has been put around by some very large companies who want people to believe that veneer preparation is painful. I have a HUGE number of patients who have had veneers prepared completely painlessly.
If a substantial amount of tooth is removal is required, you were not really suitable for veneers to start with.
Another totally incorrect statement is that everyone is suitable for no prep veneers. I do use no prep veneers, but not everyone is suitable for them. The absolute key for all cosmetic cases is exceptional planning and execution of technique whilst using the best materials and technicians available. Many no prep veneer companies claim the reason they can be no prep is because thier porcelain is “very thin”, very often quoting that their veneers can be 0.3mm thin. Well allow me to tell you that this is not thin. I have used world class technicians and together we have produced veneers 0.15mm thin, half the thickness of no prep veneers!
Another problem with no prep veneers is that they are not reversible, the bonding protocol is not reversible, and in this sense they are exactly the same as other veneers.
Another common misconception is that no prep veneers look as good as the veneers we produce at Red Sky Dental Spa, this simply is not true. As the technicians do not have any room to work with the porcelain, the veneers look false and unnatural. Not a problem if you like the false look!
Technicians require 0.5mm of room in order to produce natural results. The technique I use was taught to me by the world’s best dentists in porcelain veneers and results in tooth preparation so minimal that you probably wouldn’t even see the preparations. In fact, many no prep veneers also require “a little preparation”
A further problem with no preparation veneers is that the margins of the veneers cannot be hidden, and they do pick up staining and decay. This results in no preparation veneers to be replaced much more frequently due to poor cosmetics and decay around the margins. The majority of corrective cosmetics I undertake at Red Sky Dental Spa is either due to no preparation veneers or due to dental tourism

“How does the Six Month Smiles Brace work?”
I’ve recently been asked this question so allow me to answer. Six month smiles is designed for cosmetic corrections only. There are some circumstances where more extensive bracework is required for functional reasons. 95% of those coming in to see me are suitable for the brace.
Six month smiles utilizes tooth coloured brackets and wires, and is therefore very discrete. These braces are fixed to your teeth and the huge benefit is that fixed braces can move teeth in directions that the Inman aligner and Invisalign cannot. This means that there IS a discrete and cosmetic option for boosting your confidence which will work quickly!
The Six month smiles wires have memory in them, and apply gentle forces which straighten your teeth. It is a safe and extremely effective method for straightening your teeth.

“Which treatment is best, Six Month Smiles, Inman aligner or Invisalign?”
Another question I often get asked. The truth is that all of these treatment options work very well in the right situations. The Inman aligner and Invisalign have more restricted tooth movements than Six Month Smiles, and we would need to do a full consultation before we could tell you which system you would be best suited for.
All of these treatment options provide a method for increasing your confidence. We have seen many people who would cover their mouths and avoid smiling completely change. It is truly humbling when someone say’s to us that we have changed their life!
Six Month Smiles and the Inman aligner offer very rapid and safe tooth movements. The Invisalign system is somewhat slower but practically invisible.

Nighttime tooth grinding, or nocturnal bruxism is a massively destructive process of which you have very little control over.
Many sites our there tell you of ways to stop teeth grinding at night, and offer many different types of bite guards to help you stay in control of this problem. Allow me to lift all the dogma surrounding the process.
Bruxism CANNOT be stopped. It is controlled by a part of the brain over which we have no conscious or subconscious control. People who brux can apply 10 times the normal force to their teeth, and often results in accelerated tooth wear, regular breaking of teeth, filling which keep falling off, headaches and migraines.
Botox can help slightly but it does not reduce the forces enough and many experience continued symptoms, just not as severe. Also remember that the botox needs topping up every 4 months or so.
The condition is often poorly understood and a number of bite guards are made which either do nothing or compound the problem, and many websites offer unscientific advice and products.
The NTI device is specifically designed to dramatically reduce the amount of force you can apply during bruxism. Please note my careful choice of words; dramatically reduce NOT stop. Remember nothing can stop bruxism. This device has FDA approving as the best method for reducing tension headaches and migraines which are related to tooth grinding. The NTI reduces bite forces by over 60%, and there is no other product or treatment method which comes close, and believe me, I’ve read the research and used most of them, including botox.

Another common question we get is “Does 6 month smiles really only take 6 months?”
The answer to this is yes, on average! The 6 Month Smiles braces are a very fast brace system, and most people have straight teeth in 6 months. The actual treatment time obviously depends on complexity or treatment, and generally ranges from 4-9 months. The majority fo these cases are completed in 6 months, hence the name!
